PhD studies at the Faculty of Law
The doctoral studies lead to the achivement of the highest academic degree. At the Faculty of Law, the PhD studies aim to train jurists to become highly skilled, capable of contributing to the development of the science of law.
The PhD programme promotes the development and deepening of thought and juridical analysis, being open to interdisciplinary approach.
With excellent educational opportunities, the Faculty of Law is a reliable partner of the Romanian legal system and aims to actively collaborate with the faculties of law and legal institutions of the European Union.

Form of education. The doctoral studies are organized in the form of full-time studies or distance learning studies, with funding from the state budget (subject to availability) or by paying tuition fees.
Date of admission. The admission to doctoral studies takes place every year in September, subject to availability of each doctoral supervisor.
Who can apply for the admission exam. In order to apply for a PhD programme at the Faculty of Law, the candidates must hold a Master's degree or an equivalent qualification.
Admission procedure. The quality of PhD student is acquired by competition. The same admission criteria are required for both Romanian and international candidates. The admission consists in passing a written exam (with a bibliography established and published on the website of the Doctoral School) and an interview, according to the enforceable law.
Duration. The Doctoral Degree Programme has a duration of 3 years. It may be extended only on the grounds expressly provided for in the organization regulations of the doctoral studies.
Language of studies. The PhD programme is conducted in Romanian. International applicants must enrol in a preparatory year for learning the Romanian language or submit documents attesting at least four consecutive years of studies in the Romanian language or submit a certificate of proficiency in Romanian.
As an exception, the PhD programme can be conducted also in an international language, in case of PhD students who come from member states of the European Union, the European Economic Area, the Swiss Confederation or who come from foreign universities with whom the “Alexandru Ioan Cuza” University in Iasi collaborates. In each individual case, before the admission exam, one must have the formal consent of the respective doctoral supervisor.
The Programme of doctoral studies. The doctoral degree programme comprises a training program based on advanced university studies (TPAS) and a scientific research program (SRP). TPAS consists in completing a 30 ECTS credits educational component. SRP is based on an individual plan of scientific research developed by the doctoral supervisor, supported by a guidance commission. The guidance commission consists of three other professors.
The PhD student’s research activity is evaluated on basis of four research reports presented to the doctoral supervisor and the guidance commission:
- A report during the first year, after the completion of TPAS, in form of a project that should contain a broad outline of the future thesis, current state of the research field, study objectives, research methodology, the graphic of the intended activities, etc.;
- Two reports in the second or third year of the PhD studies; each doctoral supervisor decides on the content and the form of these reports;
- The submission of the thesis to the doctoral supervisor and the guidance commission for analysis in order to obtain consent for the public presentation of the thesis (the final report).
Completion of the PhD studies. The doctoral Degree Programme ends with a thesis. The candidate presents publicly his/her doctoral thesis before a Commission of specialists, consisting of at least 5 members. If all requirements are met, the Commission proposes to award the candidate the doctoral degree. After the thesis validation by the Ministry of Education and Scientific Research, the PhD title is awarded through an order of the Minister of Education.
Facilities.
● The Doctoral School of the Faculty of Law offers PhD students the possibility to publish the results of their research in the Annals of "Alexandru Ioan Cuza" University in Iasi, the Juridical Sciences series, a publication indexed in international databases (HeinonLine and CEEOL).
● At the Faculty of Law function the Circle of Criminal Sciences, the Circle of Civil Procedural Law „Eugen Herovanu”, the Circle of Public International Law, the Robertianum Center in which operate the Circle of Legal Hermeneutics „The School of Organic Law", the Circle of European Civil Law "Dimitrie Alexandresco", the Circle of European Social Law "Europae Caritas", the Workshop of Intellectual Creations "Insignis”, as means for strengthening academic research and debate.
● The Doctoral School of the Faculty of Law has partnerships with 25 Faculties of Law in France, Spain, Italy, Greece, Finland, Germany, Poland, Turkey, Czech Republic, where PhD students benefit from Erasmus mobilities.
● The Doctoral School of the Faculty of Law and the Institute of Criminal Sciences in Bordeaux, France, organizes, annually, the International Francophone Conference for PhD students in criminal law.
● The Doctoral School of the Faculty of Law encourages doctoral programmes with joint supervision (cotutelle) through interdisciplinary collaboration with other Doctoral Schools from the same university and from abroad.
Research infrastructure. The Doctoral School of the Faculty of Law has at its disposal tree rooms dedicated to the research activity of the PhD students (one for the PhD students of each of the doctoral supervisor), situated in semi-basement of Building B of the "Alexandru Ioan Cuza" University in Iasi: room 132 B with the surface of 33 m2 for criminal law, room 116 B with the surface of 33 m2 for comparative private law, room 121 B with the surface of 33 m2 for international trade law. The rooms are provided with computers connected to the internet, Wi-fi, modern furniture, movement sensors.
The PhD students can use two legal laboratories provided with performant equipment. The legal informatics laboratory 1 is equipped with 20 computers HP Compaq Business Desktop 6000 pro, where one has access to the internet and to the legal soft “Legis”. The legal informatics laboratory 2 is equipped with 17 computers HP dc5700 connected to the internet.
In the research activity, the PhD students have also a library at their disposal. The Library of the Faculty of Law has a reading room with a capacity of 72 seats and owns over 45.000 volumes. We mention that the Library purchases annually books and periodicals. The library also owns 10 computers connected to the Internet and with an installed legal soft, as well as data bases with books in electronic format. The PhD students have access to important scientific data bases such as ProQuest, Oxford Journals, Cambridge Journals, Springer, Ebsco, Scopus, ScienceDirect, CEEOL.
For the public presentation of their PhD thesis, the PhD students of the Faculty of Law can use one of the Faculty’s rooms: Matei Cantacuzino Lecture Room (surface 96 m2, seats – 98), Vespasian Pella Room (surface 63.6 m2, seats – 30) and Council Room (surface 64.05 m2, seats – 24).
